FAMAGUSTA : BELOVED CITY - ΑΜΜΩΧΟΣΤΟΣ: ΑΓΑΠΗΜΕΝΗ ΠΟΛΗ

You're sleeping
with out sespecting our sorrow
for your loss
we look at you sleeping
without you knowing
that you bring tears in our eyes
Famagusta

After thirty-three years questions multiply
The birds seem to have lost their way there,
same with our hopes

The city seems so near, more near than ever,
but so far, that even dreams cannot have horizons
let alone hopes

The letters which Famagustians have left
on the barbed wires are no longer there,
the wind has taken them away,
our loss of courage has taken them away
or has the postman, maybe died?

It seems that postmen die
after trying for the third time
to find the receiver

At any event, Nicholas who has left out
his soul pinned on the barbed wires
has stopped writing letters,
he now only whispers songs
for this annual remembrance of his city,
he has send me few proses
to offer you,
like the wine of consolation
for the postman who has maybe died

The nights will be approaching
more and more closely,
as you are waiting for the morning light
to brake in
when the squares will be emptying
and no-one will be present
to look at you

It is the people whom you called birds
and when the winter approaches,
they always fly away
and maybe come to you if their wings are broken
or if they are hungry-Famagusta

Here my days pass in the rain,
shipwrecked nights walk in the streets
I want to say something
but the silence terrifies me

I am scared if winter comes again
and you disappear
I am scared if the wind tears up your sails,
and from the way the wind is blowing
you will not find the footprints of your return
that they would be spread out
like smashed pieces of some day passed

Now that you want to return,
I am afraid to see you,
I have forgotten my name
and I no longer exist here
