During the fall of Cyprus to the Ottomans in 1570,the sacrifice of Maria Sygklitiki, is legendary. coming from the noble Nicosia family of the Sygklitikians, Maria Siglitiki was included among the most beautiful young men and women of the island who "were selected" in order to be sent to the Sultan for his sexual pleasures. When the captives were led to the Turkish ship which was to transport them to Constantinole, Maria Sygklitiki decided not to accept the humiliation. She managed to approach the gunpowder room of the ship and put it on fire blowing it in the air. The ship had still not sailed but was anchored at the gulf of Famagusta. Two more ships that were anchored next to it also caught on fire and blew up. They were loaded with captives. They were burned and were destroyed also. The date was the 6th of October 1570.In this way Maria Sygklitiki put an end to her life and to the life of many captives that were found with her. She simultaneously took revenge at the invaders, and many of them were kil
led also. It is reported that from the captives of the three ships only four were saved.
