Fairuz's shy, private and conservative personality has been discussed often by commentators. Despite her celebrity status, Fairuz never acted like a celebrity and maintained an almost ascetic life style independently of her fame and riches which opened up the whole world to her. During her singing carrier of fifty years, she only gave a handful of interviews and always avoided publicity. Throughout her life, Fairuz had always been a very devoted Christian. She cοmes from a poor Assyrian Orthodox family. Her Father Wadi Haddad was Assyrian and originally came from the Assyrian city of Mardin in Asia Minor (now Turkey), but the Assyrians were driven out by the Ottoman-kemalist nationalist troops, and Feiruz's father settled in Lebanon were he married Lisa el Boustani (Fairuz’s mother), a Maronite Lebanese. Fairuz converted to Greek Orthodoxy when she married Assy who was Greek Orthodox. Fairuz has been chanting in Orthodox churches every year on Great Friday for decades now. Every year she chants the Orthodox Great Friday hymns dressed in black and with tears in her eyes which she usually tries to hide by wearing glasses.
Fairuz had many struggles throughout her life. Fairuz had a difficult marriage with Assy, who it is widely believed to have been physically abusive to her. From her marrage with Assy, Fairuz had two boys: Ziad and Hille, and two girls: Layal and Rima. She gave birth first to Ziad, then Hille, Layal, and finally Rima. Hille became sick from meningitis soon after his birth and became paralyzed for the rest of his life. She still takes care of him to this day. Her daughter Layal died in 1987 of a brain stroke. Fairuz was deeply affected by the death of her daughter and the disablity of her son. Each Great Friday, Fairuz chants feeling the pain of a mother who looses a child and on the Cross perhaps she does not see only Jesus but maybe her own life.
