During the Greek revolution of 1821, when the Turks had run over to reconquer the Greek islands, the women of Karpathos, those who could fight, fought alongside their husbands and brothers. The women who were unable to take up arms and fight, took to the maintains and looked after their own children as well as the children of the women who were engaging in the war. They also helped the fighters in any other way they could. One of these women who went by the name of Maroukla, had five young children of her neighbours, along with her own, under her care and looked after them.
A little further away from the place where Maroukla was guarding the children, she heared the Turks coming by passing through the dense bushes. During that time the children were crying. The risk was eminent. In order to save the children, Maroukla left her hiding place. The Turks as was excepted, rushed to arrest her, and once they arrested her, they raped and killed her. And the result was that the children survived.
